ISO 9001 can be described as an international standard that specifies the requirements needed to implement an effective quality management system (QMS). ISO 9001 was first published by the International Organization for Standardization, an international organization comprised of the national standard bodies from more than 160 countries. In September of 2015 the latest ISO 9001 version was published.

Original publication in 1987, ISO 9001 was subject to revisions in 1994, 2000 and then in 2008. The most recent revision was announced on September 2015
ISO 9001:1994 made modifications that improved control over development and design clauses, and other clarifications. The 1994 series slightly changed the role of ISO 9002, 9003.
Revision ISO 9001 was made to address issues that were mentioned in relation to ISO 9001.2000.
